If you decide to take them to the doctor or they are experiencing any symptoms (listed above) please notify Ms. Ashley ASAP. Please take a moment to review Common Childhood Illness Protocols. ISR requires students to be fever (100.4 or above), vomiting, and/or diarrhea FREE WITHOUT medication for 48 hours before returning to lessons, even if the doctor says otherwise. What if your child goes to the doctor for a sick visit? Please let us know ASAP. They will not be able to attend lessons until approval is given by the nursing team. An MLU will need to be completed as well. Students cannot attend lessons if they have received a vaccine within 12 hours of lessons. Please schedule vaccines around lessons. If a student misses 3 or more consecutive lessons due to illness or injury a missed lesson update will need to be completed with the national ISR nursing team using this link. <image:title>@ Lessons - @ Lessons {Valley Fitness Lessons} Park in front of the pool building. Use the door with the steps to enter the pool. Arrive 5 minutes early to ensure your child’s lesson starts on time. Please limit the number of adults who accompany the child to lessons. Space is limited inside Valley Fitness’ Pool Area. We prefer only one adult per child. Go to the open yoga mat, and set up your double layer of towels. Remove any unnecessary layers of clothing from your child so he/she is ready for lessons after the *BUDS interview. See chapter 4 of the parent resource guide. Stay seated at your towel and keep other children seated as well. Support your child during lessons. You know your child best. If they like a celebration, cheer them on. If they do better with a “great job” after lessons then feel free to save your praise. Please do not “coach” your child from the poolside. Yelling “float, float, float” is not helpful to the process :) There are things I’m looking for in the water that is not obvious from the pool deck. Once lessons begin say goodbye to all flotation devices. They cause interference to the ISR process. We will go over best practices poolside during lessons.</image:title>

      <image:title>@ Lessons - After Lessons</image:title>
<image:caption>You will be asked to bring three clean towels with you to every lesson. Place two towels on the pool deck, and save the third towel to dry your child, wrap him up and keep him warm after the lesson. Keeping two towels on the pool deck creates a clean, dry surface for your child to lie on that will limit his exposure to the damp pool deck, which could potentially harbor germs. When the lesson is complete, I will lay your child on the towels, on his left side. Encourage your child to remain lying on his left side for at least a couple of minutes. You may also want to gently massage his back to help him expel any air he may have swallowed during the lesson. Be sure to wrap your child in the third towel so that he stays warm. If your child wants to eat or drink immediately after the lesson, allow him small sips of water or a drink that is easy to digest. It’s important that your child not “gulp down” a large quantity of fluids immediately after the lesson, because if he has any air in his stomach from the lesson, quickly drinking a large quantity of fluids could cause a stomachache and/or gas pain.</image:caption>

<image:title>After Lessons - All parents know how quickly a young child grows. It seems like children outgrow clothes and shoes about as quickly as you can buy them! Needless to say, your child’s height, weight, body composition, center of gravity, strength, and coordination are always changing and evolving. Developmentally, children are constantly acquiring new motor skills. A young baby may very well go from just learning to crawl on all fours to walking without assistance in just a few months. Toddlers go from an unsteady walk to a full-out run, sometimes seemingly overnight. And preschool-age children are constantly mastering new physical feats like jumping, climbing, balancing, kicking, and catching, to name just a few . Learning to swim is a sensorimotor skill— just like riding a bike or roller-skating. Once learned, the skill is never forgotten. However, in time your child will outgrow the body that learned the swimming skills. As they grow, your child’s center of gravity lowers, and they will need to learn to make different types of adjustments to be able to achieve and maintain the back float position easily. They will also be capable of more and more coordinated arm and leg movements while swimming. The confidence in their abilities will grow as they practice periodically with their Instructor. It is critical to point out that even though your child needs refresher or maintenance lessons, they will not “forget” their skills. These refresher lessons simply help to ensure that they can perform the skill well, with ease and confidence. Your child’s need for refresher or maintenance lessons will depend on how old they were when they first started lessons, how consistently they attended the initial lessons, how much they have been in the water since the last series of lessons, and how much they’ve grown since the last lesson. Later in this chapter, we’ve set out some general guidelines about refresher and maintenance lessons, but your Instructor is best suited to determine when refresher or maintenance lessons will be needed for your child.</image:title>

<image:title>The Valley ISR Team - What is ISR?</image:title>
<image:caption>Founded in 1966 by Dr. Harvey Barnett, Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) is a global leader in survival swimming lessons for infants and young children. With a network of over 700 highly trained instructors, we offer the safest and most effective lessons available. Our ISR Self-Rescue® program is backed by more than 45 years of research, achieving life-saving results for young swimmers. At ISR, we recognize that pool fences, alarms, and adult supervision are critical components of drowning prevention. However, over 4,000 drowning deaths per year highlight a crucial gap in these strategies: the child's role. We believe children must be empowered as active participants in their own safety. With over 300,000 ISR graduates and 800 documented survival stories, our program proves that children can be taught the skills they need to save themselves. ISR embraces children's natural curiosity and capability, guiding them to develop essential water survival skills.</image:caption>

<image:title>@ Lessons - @ Lessons Please arrive 5 minutes early to ensure your child’s lesson starts on time. Make sure to read your confirmation email for information on parking. This will vary depending on the location of your child’s lessons. Please limit the number of adults who accompany the child to lessons. Space is limited inside the pool area.

Place two towels on the pool deck, and save the third towel to dry your child, wrap them up and keep them warm after the lesson. Keeping two towels on the pool deck creates a clean, dry surface for your child to lie on that will limit exposure to the damp pool deck, which could potentially harbor germs. When the lesson is complete, I will lay your child on the towels, on their left side. Encourage your child to remain lying on their left side for at least a couple of minutes. You may also want to gently massage their back to help them expel any air they may have swallowed during the lesson. Be sure to wrap your child in the third towel so that they stay warm. If your child wants to eat or drink immediately after the lesson, allow them small sips of water or a drink that is easy to digest. It’s important that your child not “gulp down” a large quantity of fluids immediately after the lesson, because if they have any air in their stomach from the lesson, quickly drinking a large quantity of fluids could cause a stomachache and/or gas pain.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Before Day 1 of Lessons - Illness Guidelines</image:title>
<image:caption>Communication is KEY to your child’s safety. If you decide to take them to the doctor or they are experiencing any symptoms of illness please notify us! Please take a moment to review Common Childhood Illness Protocols. ISR requires students to be fever (100.4 or above), vomiting, and/or diarrhea FREE for 48 hours. If a student misses 3 or more consecutive lessons due to illness a missed lesson update will need to be completed with the national ISR nursing team using this link.</image:caption>
